Why is Dagger Woods, Nova Scotia said to be haunted?
Dagger Woods, a small forested community east of Antigonish, Nova Scotia, has carried tales of a menacing presence since shortly after settlers arrived in the late 1700s. Local folklore calls the entity the Hidey-Hinder, or the Dagger Woods Howler, and ties it to a crime of passion: a husband said to have killed his wife with a pearl-handled dagger before disappearing into the trees, never seen again. Some storytellers say the Howler is that man, doomed to relive the killing; others claim a dark force possessed him first and turned him into the thing that haunts the woods. Over generations the legend absorbed older beliefs in fairy mounds and 'the little people,' with reports of travellers who vanished for days in the forest and returned with no memory of what happened.
