Why is Loftus Hall said to be haunted?

Loftus Hall stands alone on the wind-scoured Hook Peninsula in County Wexford, its current Gothic form dating to 1870, built on the site of a much older house. Its central legend traces back to around 1766, when a mysterious stranger arrived during a storm and joined the Tottenham family for cards. When Anne Tottenham dropped a card and bent to retrieve it, she reportedly saw a cloven hoof beneath the table β€” and the stranger vanished through the roof in a ball of fire, leaving a permanent scorch mark. Anne is said to have gone mad with grief and was locked in the Tapestry Room until her death, and later residents, including nuns who ran the house as a convent school, claimed to hear crying and see her ghost pacing the room. The house passed through hotel owners and religious orders before opening for public tours in 2012, drawing visitors eager to test the legend of "the Hall of the Devil" for themselves.
