Why is Shelbourne Hotel said to be haunted?

Overlooking St Stephen's Green in Dublin, the Shelbourne Hotel has hosted guests since the 1820s and witnessed major moments in Irish history, including the drafting of the Irish Constitution in one of its rooms in 1922. Its long-standing ghost story centers on room 302, where staff and guests have for decades reported the sound of a child crying, small handprints appearing on the windows, and a feeling of being watched, said locally to be the spirit of a young girl named Mary Masters. Some versions of the tale connect the haunting to the ground the hotel was built on, once close to a burial site linked to the Great Famine of the 1840s, when Dublin's poor and starving were buried in mass graves near the city center. Staff at the hotel have long taken the stories in stride, and room 302 has, if anything, become a minor attraction for guests hoping for an encounter of their own.
