Why is Kilmainham Gaol said to be haunted?

Kilmainham Gaol in Dublin held some of the most consequential prisoners in Irish history, from participants in the 1798 rebellion to, most famously, the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising, seven of whom, including Patrick Pearse and James Connolly, were executed by firing squad in the prison's Stonebreakers' Yard in May 1916. The gaol closed in 1924 and stood derelict for decades before restoration began in the 1960s, and it was during this long period of abandonment that many of its ghost stories took hold among Dubliners who explored the crumbling cell blocks. Guides and visitors today report cold spots and a sense of dread in the East Wing, along with claims of the executed leaders' presence still felt near the yard where they died, and of the ghost of Anne Devlin, a housekeeper imprisoned and mistreated there in 1798-99. Now a state-run museum, Kilmainham draws visitors as much for its atmosphere of confinement and loss as for its role in Irish independence.
