Why is Montpelier Hill said to be haunted?

Rising above Dublin at 383 metres, Montpelier Hill is dominated by the ruined "Hell Fire Club" lodge, built around 1725 by politician William Conolly using stones taken from two prehistoric passage tombs that once crowned the summit, a desecration locals immediately blamed for the building's cursed reputation. From the 1730s the lodge became a meeting place for the Dublin Hellfire Club, a society of aristocratic young men reputed to indulge in blasphemous rituals and heavy drinking, and legend holds that during one card game a stranger who joined the table was revealed to be the Devil himself when a player dropped a card and saw a cloven hoof beneath it, vanishing afterward in a ball of fire that also claimed the lodge's roof. Hikers today report cold, oppressive air inside the roofless ruin and describe an unshakeable feeling of unease that sets in as darkness falls, making Montpelier Hill one of Ireland's most enduring haunted landmarks.
