LOCATION
Why is Duckett's Grove said to be haunted?
Duckett's Grove rises from the Carlow countryside as a shell of Gothic towers and empty windows, all that remains of the grand seat the Duckett family built in the early 19th century and remodeled into its dramatic castellated form around 1830. The estate once spanned some 12,000 acres, but the family's fortunes and reputation soured; William Duckett, who inherited in the mid-1800s, became known locally as a hard landlord during the Famine years, and legend blames a curse laid on the house by a woman he evicted. A catastrophic fire gutted the interior in 1933, leaving only the stone skeleton visitors see today. Locals who wander the walled gardens after dusk report footsteps in the empty halls and a cold presence at the ruined tower, said by some to be the spurned tenant who swore the Ducketts would "never rest easy in this house again."
