What is Morag?
Morag is the name given to a large, elusive creature said to inhabit Loch Morar, the deepest freshwater loch in the British Isles, on the west coast of the Scottish Highlands. Witnesses describe a long, dark shape with humps breaking the surface, compared to an oversized eel, a plesiosaur-like animal, or an unusually large fish. The most cited modern encounter dates to 1969, when two local men, William Simpson and Duncan McDonnell, reported their boat striking something large and solid before a creature surfaced alongside them, a case that drew national press attention and inspired the short-lived Loch Morar Survey. The legend draws on older Highland folklore about water spirits and kelpies guarding Scotland's deep lochs, and some tellings even link Morag's appearance to omens of death for local clans. Skeptics point out that the loch's dark, peat-stained water, boat wakes, floating debris, otters, or large eels can easily be misread as something more mysterious, and no physical evidence has confirmed the animal's existence.
