What is Owlman of Mawnan?

The Owlman of Mawnan is a winged, humanoid figure with owl-like features—large glowing eyes, feathers, and pincer-like claws—said to haunt the churchyard and woods of Mawnan in Cornwall, close to the Helford River. The most cited report dates to April 1976, when two young sisters on holiday, June and Vicky Melling, described a huge grey birdlike creature hovering above the church tower, sparking further local sightings and press coverage compared to America's Mothman legend. Cornwall's coastline has a long folkloric tradition of piskies, spriggans, and other uncanny woodland beings, and the Owlman is often framed as a modern addition to that lineage, with some suspecting it was inspired by, or confused with, the Mothman story once it became internationally known. Skeptics point to misidentified large owls such as eagle owls, a self-described local prankster who later claimed responsibility, or imagination fed by the eerie, wooded churchyard at dusk. Despite the doubts, the Owlman remains a well-known piece of Cornish cryptid lore.
