What is Spring-heeled Jack?

Spring-heeled Jack is the demonic, athletic figure who terrorized Victorian London and its suburbs beginning in 1837, described in newspaper reports as capable of leaping over walls and hedges of astonishing height, with clawed hands, eyes that glowed like burning coals, and a talent for breathing blue and white flame into his victims' faces before bounding away. The panic began after several women reported an assailant tearing at their clothing with metal claws in Barnes and Clapham; the case reached Parliament, where the Lord Mayor of London publicly acknowledged the complaints in early 1838. One widely printed victim's account read: "He vomited forth blue and white flame from his mouth, and his eyes resembled red balls of fire." Sightings recurred sporadically for decades across England, from Aldershot barracks in the 1870s to Liverpool in 1904, with soldiers reportedly firing on the figure without effect. No arrest was ever made and no consistent physical evidence surfaced. Historians favor a combination of copycat pranksters, exaggerated press coverage feeding a moral panic, and possibly an athletic individual using spring-loaded boots, a device patented in that era, to perform the impossible-seeming leaps witnesses described.
