What is Kelpie?
The Kelpie is a shape-shifting water spirit from Scottish folklore, most often a beautiful black or grey horse that lurks near lochs, rivers, and streams, luring travelers to climb onto its back before plunging into the water and drowning them, sometimes devouring the remains. In some tales it appears as a handsome young man to seduce and trap unwary women, betrayed only by weeds or sand tangled in his hair. One of the earliest literary mentions comes from Robert Burns's 1785 poem 'Address to the Deil,' which warns that 'water-kelpies haunt the foord, by your direction, an' nighted trav'lers are allur'd to their destruction.' Belief in kelpies was widespread across the Highlands and islands for centuries, particularly around dangerous fords and fast-flowing rivers, warning children and travelers to stay away from treacherous waters. The legend likely draws on real drownings in Scotland's unpredictable rivers, personifying the water's danger as a cunning, malevolent creature. Today the kelpie survives mainly in literature, art, and tourism, most visibly in the giant Kelpies sculptures near Falkirk.
