Why is Edinburgh Castle said to be haunted?

Perched on the volcanic rock that has anchored Edinburgh since at least the Iron Age, Edinburgh Castle has seen so many sieges, executions, and imprisonments that ghost researchers once ranked it among the most haunted sites in Europe after a large-scale paranormal survey conducted there in 2001. The best-known tale is that of a phantom piper sent to explore a tunnel said to run from the castle down to Holyroodhouse; his bagpipes reportedly fell silent partway through and he was never seen again, though some claim his tune can still be heard rising faintly from underground. Visitors and guards have also long described a headless drummer boy glimpsed on the ramparts, said to appear as an omen before the castle comes under attack β€” sightings reported before Cromwell's siege in 1650. Prisoners held in the vaults during the Napoleonic Wars are said to still haunt the dungeons where French and American captives once carved graffiti into the stone.
