Why is Busby's stoop chair said to be haunted?
In 1702, Yorkshire counterfeiter Thomas Busby was hanged near Thirsk after murdering his father-in-law, Daniel Auty, reportedly following an argument in Busby's favorite chair at what became known as the Busby Stoop Inn. Before his execution, legend holds Busby cursed the chair, swearing "whoever sits in my chair will die." Over the following two and a half centuries, the pub built up a grim local tally of accidents, suicides, and sudden deaths linked to patrons who had used the seat, including several RAF airmen who allegedly died shortly after sitting there before flying missions during the Second World War. By the 1970s the landlord, unnerved by the pattern, donated the chair to Thirsk Museum, where curators still refuse to let anyone sit in it, displaying it mounted high on a wall instead.
