Why is Tower of London said to be haunted?
The Tower of London has guarded the Thames since William the Conqueror raised the White Tower in 1078, and its long history of executions, imprisonment, and intrigue has left it thick with reported hauntings. The most cited apparition is Anne Boleyn, beheaded within the walls in 1536 on the orders of Henry VIII; guards and yeoman warders have described seeing a headless woman walking near the site of the scaffold on Tower Green. Visitors and staff have also reported the ghostly forms of the "Princes in the Tower," the young Edward V and his brother Richard, who vanished in 1483 and were long rumored to have been murdered there.
