Why is Crown Hotel, Poole said to be haunted?
The Crown Hotel in Poole, first licensed as the Crowne Inn in 1697, is often named the most haunted pub in Dorset. According to local tradition, in the 17th century an owner's family kept their deformed infant twins hidden away, chained in an upper room out of public view. When the children died, legend says they were buried beneath the floor of the inn's larder. Guests and staff have long reported the sound of children playing across the empty courtyard at night, and several witnesses describe a sorrowful young girl in a white nightdress seen leaning against the staircase banister. One guest recalled a bedroom door rattling violently before its handle slowly turned on its own, revealing an empty corridor. Others describe faint piano notes drifting through the halls and the unsettling sound of something heavy being dragged across an upstairs floor.
