Why is Chillingham Castle said to be haunted?
Chillingham Castle in Northumberland has been called "the most haunted castle in Britain," a reputation built over centuries as a Border stronghold used to imprison Scottish captives following William Wallace's 1298 defeat, some tortured in its dungeon. The best-documented haunting is the "Blue Boy," first reported in the Victorian era: a child's scream said to echo from the Pink Room at midnight, followed by a pale blue halo of light around the bed, once linked by workmen to a child's skeleton and fragments of blue clothing found bricked into the wall. Visitors and staff also describe the "White Lady," believed to be Lady Mary Berkeley, wandering the corridors searching for the husband who abandoned her in the 17th century for her own sister.
