Why is Ancient Ram Inn said to be haunted?
Dating from around 1145, when it is said to have first housed workers building the neighboring St Mary's Church in Wotton-under-Edge, the Ancient Ram Inn stopped serving as a pub decades ago but has drawn paranormal investigators from across Britain since owner John Humphries began opening it to the public in the late 20th century, promoting it as "the most haunted building in England." Humphries claimed the building sat atop a pagan burial ground and the intersection of two ley lines, and reported discovering child skeletons buried beneath the floor during renovation work, along with what he described as evidence of historic occult rituals in the property's oldest rooms. Visitors and overnight guests have long reported being scratched or pushed by an unseen presence in the "Bishop's Room," strangled sensations attributed to an incubus, and the sound of a child crying near the fireplace. The inn remains privately run and hosts paid overnight ghost vigils.
