What is Beast of Bodmin Moor?
The Beast of Bodmin Moor is a supposed large, black, cat-like predator said to roam the wild moorland of Bodmin Moor in Cornwall, in the far southwest of England. Witnesses since the 1970s and 1980s have reported a panther- or puma-sized animal prowling the heather and rocky tors, and farmers have blamed it for mysterious livestock deaths. The legend fits a broader British tradition of alleged "alien big cats," believed to be exotic pets released from private collections after a 1976 law restricted keeping dangerous wild animals. Sightings, paw prints, and blurry photographs periodically renewed media interest and prompted a 1995 government investigation, which found no conclusive evidence but did not entirely rule out an occasional escaped cat. Most researchers attribute the reports to large dogs, feral cats, deer, or misidentified shadows on the open moor, combined with the eerie, fog-prone landscape. The Beast remains one of Britain's most enduring modern cryptid legends.
