Why is Bodmin Jail said to be haunted?

Built in 1779 on the edge of Bodmin Moor, Bodmin Jail was Cornwall's principal prison for nearly 150 years and the site of more than 50 public executions, including that of Selina Wadge, hanged in 1878 for drowning her infant son, and William Hampton, whose 1909 hanging was the last public execution in Cornwall. Closed in 1927, the surviving cell blocks now operate as a visitor attraction, and staff and paranormal investigators have logged decades of reports: disembodied screams from the execution pit, cold spots in the condemned cell, and shadowy figures glimpsed pacing the dark corridors where prisoners once awaited the gallows.
