Why is Airth Castle said to be haunted?

Airth Castle overlooks the village of Airth and the River Forth in Scotland's Falkirk area, its oldest surviving tower dating back to at least the fifteenth century on a site with ties to Robert the Bruce's family in the fourteenth. The building operated for decades as a hotel and spa until closing in 2023, and during that time staff and guests regularly reported the sound of a woman weeping in the older wing, cold spots in the original tower stair, and sightings of a grey-clad figure said locally to be a former lady of the castle mourning a lost child. A separate account tells of a piper who reportedly walked into a tunnel said to run beneath the grounds and was never seen again, his bagpipes said to still be heard faintly on certain nights. The castle's long ownership by the Bruce, Elphinstone, and Graham families over the centuries gives the hauntings a depth of documented history that few Scottish hotel ghosts can match.
