Why is Beaulieu Abbey said to be haunted?

Beaulieu Abbey was founded in 1203–04 by King John, an unusual act of piety from a monarch better known for conflict with the Church, who populated it with thirty Cistercian monks sent directly from the mother house at Cîteaux in France. The abbey thrived for over three centuries as a place of sanctuary and prayer until its suppression under Henry VIII in 1538, when its buildings were largely demolished for stone, leaving only fragments within today's Beaulieu estate. Visitors and estate staff have described choral chanting drifting across the grounds near the ruined cloister at dusk, with no choir or recording present, and monks in pale habits glimpsed moving silently between the surviving walls before fading from sight. Some who have worked in the estate's archives at night describe a lingering sense of being watched, particularly near what remains of the old chapter house.
