Why is Bedlay Castle said to be haunted?
Tucked between Chryston and Moodiesburn in North Lanarkshire, Bedlay Castle began as a residence for the Archbishops of Glasgow before passing to the Boyd and Campbell families in the late 16th century. Its best-known legend is the "Fat Friar," the ghost of a clergyman said to have been walled up alive within the building, whose slow, dragging footsteps and heavy breathing are reportedly still heard along the older corridors after dark. A second story tells of a green-clad woman glimpsed at an upstairs window, watching visitors approach along the drive. Owners through the 20th century, including the Barr family behind Irn-Bru, spoke of unexplained noises and cold patches concentrated around the castle's oldest 16th-century core, now largely kept private.
