Why is Chislehurst Caves said to be haunted?
Chislehurst Caves are entirely man-made, dug over some 8,000 years of chalk and flint mining that left 22 miles of tunnels beneath Kent, later used as a mushroom farm, an ammunition depot in both World Wars, and famously as an air-raid shelter housing up to 15,000 Londoners a night during the Blitz. Guides on the caves' regular tours point to the "Haunted Pool," where a Druid altar and a deep, dark well are said to mark the site where a young girl drowned or was drowned generations ago; visitors on tours have reported unexplained pushes, sudden nausea, and a persistent sense of dread specifically at that one spot, feelings that vanish once the group moves on. Staff refuse to run tours alone in that section after closing, and several television ghost-hunting crews have singled out the pool as the most consistently unsettling location in the entire tunnel network.
