Why is Craigdarroch said to be haunted?
Craigdarroch House near Moniaive was the seat of the Fergusson chiefs for six centuries. Local tradition ties its haunting to Elizabeth, wife of Colonel John Fergusson, who was killed fighting the Jacobites at the Battle of Killiecrankie in 1689. Unwilling to accept his death, she is said to have haunted the old saddle room, waiting for a husband who never returned. Other chroniclers place the ghost a generation earlier, as John's mother, Elizabeth Maxwell. Whoever she was, the haunting persisted for over two centuries until, according to estate records, a Jesuit priest performed a formal exorcism 'with bell, book and candle' in 1920. No manifestations have been reported at Craigdarroch since.
