Why is Furness Abbey said to be haunted?
Furness Abbey was founded in 1123 and grew into the second-wealthiest Cistercian monastery in England before its forced dissolution in 1537, when its monks were pensioned off and its buildings stripped and left to ruin among the red sandstone of the Cumbrian valley locals call the "Vale of Deadly Nightshade." Visitors walking the ruins at dusk have long reported the sound of distant chanting carried on the wind with no source, and a hooded, robed figure glimpsed moving silently between the roofless arches before vanishing into the abbey's shadowed east end. Nineteenth-century antiquarians who camped near the ruins to sketch them recorded feeling watched throughout the night, and local guides still point out the chapter house as the spot where the chanting is most often heard, describing it as if the community that once prayed there simply never fully left.
