Why is Jay's Grave said to be haunted?
On a lonely bend of a Dartmoor lane near Hound Tor stands a small mound known as Jay's Grave, said to hold the body of Mary Jay, an 18th-century orphan and servant girl who reportedly took her own life after becoming pregnant out of wedlock and was denied burial in consecrated ground, as was customary for suicides. Buried instead at this crossroads, her grave became a magnet for ghost stories, including sightings of a grey-cloaked woman weeping beside the mound and a phantom hound. What keeps the legend alive is a genuine, unexplained mystery: fresh flowers appear on the grave year-round, left by an unknown hand, a practice recorded as far back as the 1920s and never satisfactorily traced to any single person.
