Why is Jingling Geordie's Hole said to be haunted?
Jingling Geordie's Hole takes its name from a 17th-century smuggler and pirate said to have used the cave, tucked into the cliffs between King Edward's Bay and Tynemouth Castle, as a hidden lookout over the treacherous rocks of the Black Middens. According to local legend, Geordie lured merchant ships onto the rocks by hanging lanterns to mimic vessels safely at anchor, then plundered the wrecked cargo and hid his stolen goods deep within the cave before disappearing back into the tunnels. Fishermen and coastal walkers in Tynemouth have long claimed to see a faint light bobbing near the cave mouth on stormy nights, echoing the very trick Geordie is said to have used against sailors centuries ago, and some say a low, jingling sound β coins, or chains β can still be heard from within the cave when the tide is right.
