Why is Lauriston Castle said to be haunted?
Built from 1593 with 19th-century additions overlooking the Firth of Forth, Lauriston Castle is said to be haunted by Sophia Frances Stewart, believed to be the wife of Andrew, Lord Rutherford, who reportedly died in a castle bedroom after writing her husband a letter to be opened only after her death. Visitors and staff have long reported footsteps and the rustle of silk skirts in empty rooms, along with shadowy figures said to vanish through walls. The legend resurfaced in 2020, when a visitor photographed what looked like a human figure in a window of the supposedly empty building, reigniting local interest. The City of Edinburgh, which now runs the castle as a museum, occasionally hosts Halloween "tales of terror" events built around the story.
