Why is Lumley Castle said to be haunted?
Lumley Castle was built in the 1390s by Sir Ralph Lumley, and its best-known legend concerns Lily of Lumley, a Lady Lumley said to have been thrown down the castle well by resentful monks after she abandoned Catholicism during the Reformation, her body allegedly recovered still clutching her rosary. Generations of guests at the castle, now a hotel, have reported cold spots and a woman's cries near the old chapel and stairwell believed to sit close to the historic well site. The legend gained international attention in 1993, when several members of the touring Australian cricket team reportedly fled their rooms in the night after hearing footsteps and unexplained noises, refusing to spend a second night in the castle. Staff still keep track of which rooms generate the most guest complaints, and the same handful come up every year.
