Why is Netley Abbey said to be haunted?
Founded in 1239 for Cistercian monks on the shore of Southampton Water, Netley Abbey lived quietly for three centuries before Henry VIII's commissioners seized it in 1536 and handed the buildings to Sir William Paulet, who began converting the church into a mansion. Local tradition claims the demolition was cursed: a master carpenter hired to strip the roof timbers reportedly dreamed three nights running that a falling beam would kill him if he kept working, ignored the warning, and was crushed to death exactly as foretold. Visitors to the roofless ruins today still report hearing faint Gregorian chanting on still evenings and glimpsing a hooded, robed figure moving between the broken arches of the nave.
