Why is Old Rectory, Epworth said to be haunted?
The Old Rectory in Epworth, Lincolnshire is a Queen Anne-style house rebuilt in brick in 1709 after fire destroyed the original wooden rectory, and now run as a museum by the Methodist Church. It was home to the Reverend Samuel Wesley, his wife Susanna, and their nineteen children β including John Wesley, future founder of Methodism β from 1697 to 1735. In 1716, while the family still lived there, the household reported weeks of loud knocking, groaning, and footsteps with no visible source, which they nicknamed "Old Jeffrey." Family letters describe doors slamming, furniture shaking, and a phantom presence that seemed to particularly target young Hetty Wesley. The case became one of the best-documented poltergeist reports of 18th-century England, cited for generations in accounts of the paranormal.
