Why is Pluckley said to be haunted?

In 1989 the Guinness Book of Records crowned Pluckley the most haunted village in England, citing an extraordinary cluster of twelve reported ghosts within this small Kent parish. Local lore names a screaming man drowned in a marl pit, a phantom horse-drawn coach heard on quiet nights, and the "Watercress Woman," said to have burned to death after falling asleep smoking a pipe while gathering cress by a stream. Perhaps the most famous is the Red Lady of Pluckley, believed to be a member of the Dering family from nearby Surrenden Dering, reportedly buried clutching a rose, whose ghost still wanders St Nicholas' churchyard at night. The village's reputation has drawn ghost hunters for decades, prompting complaints from residents about late-night visitors.
