Why is Raynham Hall said to be haunted?
Raynham Hall has been the seat of the Townshend family for nearly four centuries, and its most famous resident is not a Townshend at all but Lady Dorothy Walpole, sister of Britain's first prime minister, who married the 2nd Viscount Townshend in 1713 and reportedly died at the hall in 1726 under circumstances the family never fully explained. Within decades, staff and guests were reporting a woman in a brown brocade dress gliding through the corridors, and in September 1936 two photographers working for Country Life, Captain Provand and Indre Shira, captured what became the most published ghost photograph in history: a translucent figure descending the great oak staircase. The image has been debated for nearly ninety years, but sightings of the "Brown Lady" persisted for decades after, and the staircase remains, by the family's own account, the least favourite place in the house to walk alone at night.
