Why is Skipness Castle said to be haunted?

Skipness Castle, on the Kintyre peninsula, is home to one of Scotland's gentler ghost stories: the Green Lady, a child-sized spirit with golden hair, known in Gaelic tradition as a gruagach. Locals say she once tidied the castle's rooms and fed the hens overnight, and households left out small offerings of food and milk to keep her goodwill, believing it kept the cows milking. The legend also credits her with defending Skipness: when a rival clan planned a night attack, she is said to have sown confusion among the raiders until they scattered and abandoned the assault. Not every tale is flattering β€” she was also blamed for nearly killing a man who fell asleep in what she considered the wrong bed. Skipness remains one of the few Scottish ruins whose resident spirit is remembered as a helper rather than a threat.
