Why is Stirling Castle said to be haunted?
Few Scottish fortresses carry as thick a weight of history — or hauntings — as Stirling Castle, crowned on its volcanic crag since the 12th century and the site of six coronations, including that of the infant Mary, Queen of Scots in 1543. The castle's best-known ghost is the "Green Lady," long tied to a servant who, in one telling, died saving Mary from a fire started by an unattended candle; staff and visitors still report her drifting through the Great Hall, and some guides warn that ignoring a sighting brings misfortune. A "Pink Lady" is also said to cross the castle esplanade searching for a husband lost in battle. Historic Environment Scotland, which manages the site, neither confirms nor denies the stories, but the reports have persisted for well over a century.
