Why is Wemyss Castle said to be haunted?
Wemyss Castle rises on the sandstone cliffs between East and West Wemyss in Fife, its oldest tower dating to the 15th century and its halls witness to one of Scotland's most consequential meetings: here, in February 1565, Mary, Queen of Scots first met her cousin Lord Darnley, a courtship that would end in murder and civil war. Estate lore holds that a Green Lady still walks the older wings, a recurring figure in Fife's ghost tradition, sometimes linked to a servant who died in a fall on the cliff stair. Caretakers over the generations have described doors easing shut on their own and cold drafts crossing rooms with no window open. The Wemyss family, who still own the castle, rarely discuss the stories publicly, letting the sea wind and gulls do the talking instead.
