Why is Wilderhope Manor said to be haunted?

This Tudor manor house, now a National Trust youth hostel on Wenlock Edge, is linked to Major Francis Smallman, a Royalist who lived there during the English Civil War. According to the legend, Roundhead troops besieged the house and Smallman escaped on horseback down a steep slope known as Deadman's Slide; locals say his ghost can still be seen galloping away in that desperate bid for freedom. A second, less-documented tale describes the spirit of a young girl who reportedly smiles at visitors before letting out a scream. Both accounts circulate through Shropshire folklore collections rather than the National Trust's own historical materials on the property.
