What is the legend of Resurrection Mary?

Along Archer Avenue on the southwest side of Chicago drifts one of America's most beloved phantom hitchhikers: Resurrection Mary. The story usually opens at a dance hall, where a beautiful young woman in a white gown and dancing shoes spends the evening with a stranger. When he offers her a ride home, she directs him up Archer Avenue, then vanishes from the moving car as it passes the gates of Resurrection Cemetery. Some drivers say she simply steps into the road and disappears on impact; others claim she asks to be let out at the cemetery and melts through the iron bars. Local lore ties her to a young woman killed in a car accident in the 1930s while returning from the Oh Henry Ballroom, buried in her dancing dress. For decades motorists have reported the pale, cold-handed girl, and one famous night bent bars on the cemetery gate were said to bear the imprint of small hands. Resurrection Mary endures as Chicago's tender, tragic ghost, forever trying to reach a home she will never see again.
