Why is Winchester Mystery House said to be haunted?
After the deaths of her infant daughter in 1866 and her husband, rifle magnate William Wirt Winchester, in 1881, Sarah Winchester moved to San Jose and began building β and never stopped. Construction on the sprawling Victorian mansion ran continuously, by some accounts around the clock, from around 1884 until her own death in 1922, employing carpenters even through the 1906 earthquake. Popular legend holds that a medium convinced Sarah she was cursed by the spirits of everyone ever killed by a Winchester rifle, and that continuous construction would confuse the vengeful dead and keep her safe β the result is a maze of staircases leading to ceilings, doors opening onto walls, and windows set into floors. Tour guides and visitors report cold drafts, disembodied hammering echoing through empty rooms, and the sound of footsteps following behind on the stairs.
