What is the legend of The Bell Witch?
In the early 1800s, the Bell family of Adams, Tennessee, claimed to be tormented by an unseen entity that came to be known as the Bell Witch. It began, so the story goes, with strange knockings on the walls and the sound of chains dragging through the farmhouse. Soon the spirit found a voice, whispering, singing hymns, and hurling insults. It reserved special malice for patriarch John Bell, whom it swore to kill, and for his daughter Betsy, whose courtship it violently opposed. Neighbors and even, some say, a curious General Andrew Jackson visited to witness the disturbances. When John Bell died in 1820, the family found a mysterious vial of liquid nearby, and the entity reportedly cackled that it had poisoned him. The presence faded afterward, promising to return in a hundred years. Today a cave near the old property bears the witch's name, and locals still trade warnings about disturbing her. Whether poltergeist, family invention, or frontier gossip grown monstrous, the Bell Witch remains one of America's most enduring haunting tales.
