What is Bigfoot (Sasquatch)?

Bigfoot, also called Sasquatch, is a towering, hair-covered, ape-like humanoid said to roam the dense forests of the Pacific Northwest and beyond, standing well over two meters tall and leaving behind the oversized footprints that gave it its name. The legend draws on centuries-old oral traditions of Indigenous peoples across North America, who described wild, hairy forest beings long before European settlers arrived, and it merged with pioneer-era tales of "wild men" in the woods. Bigfoot became a nationwide sensation after the 1958 discovery of large footprints in Northern California, but the creature's defining moment came in 1967 at Bluff Creek, when Roger Patterson and Bob Gimlin filmed a large, dark, bipedal figure walking across a creek bed, a clip still debated today. Skeptics argue the film shows a person in a costume and attribute most sightings to bears, misidentified animals and hoaxed tracks, while no bone, body or definitive photograph has ever confirmed the species. Bigfoot remains a defining icon of American folklore and pop culture.

What is the history of Bigfoot (Sasquatch)?

On 20 October 1967, at Bluff Creek in northern California, about twenty-five miles north-west of Orleans, Roger Patterson and Bob Gimlin shot fifty-nine seconds of 16 mm colour film that became the single most analysed piece of footage in the history of cryptozoology. The film shows a large, dark, upright figure walking away across a sandbar, turning its upper body to look back at the camera in the frame that everyone knows — frame 352, the image reproduced on more posters, books and T-shirts than any other in the subject. What makes it different from the thousands of blurry images that followed is that it invited technical work, and got it. The creature's gait is not a straightforward human walk: it uses a compliant, bent-knee stride rather than the stiff-legged human step, and the arms are proportionally long. Those details are what have kept credentialed scientists involved for nearly sixty years rather than dismissing it on sight. Jeff Meldrum, professor of anatomy and anthropology at Idaho State University, remains its most prominent academic defender, and has said he is "as confident as I can be short of standing on the sandbar with Roger and Bob" that the figure was a real animal. One fact shapes everything that follows: the original film is gone. The 16 mm Kodachrome colour-reversal camera original shot by Patterson has been missing for decades. Every analysis of the last forty years has been performed on copies.

Timeline: the documented record of Bigfoot (Sasquatch)

  1. c. August 1967 According to costume maker Philip Morris, he sells Roger Patterson a six-piece gorilla suit. Patterson would later call him asking how to make it look more realistic.
  2. 20 October 1967 Roger Patterson and Bob Gimlin film fifty-nine seconds on 16 mm at Bluff Creek, California. Frame 352, with the figure turning its torso towards the camera, becomes cryptozoology's most reproduced image.
  3. 1999 Bob Heironimus states publicly that he was the man in the suit, and that he was offered a thousand dollars to wear it for a minute. He adds that the money was never paid.
  4. 2013 Bill Munns and Jeff Meldrum publish a technical paper on image integrity in Relict Hominoid Inquiry, after scanning all 954 frames of the first-generation copy at 5K. The camera original remains lost.

Is there a rational explanation for Bigfoot (Sasquatch)?

There are two independent testimonies against the Patterson-Gimlin film, and they come not from professional sceptics but from people who say they took part. Bob Heironimus stated in 1999 that he was the man in the suit. He said he rode out to Bluff Creek with Patterson and Gimlin and was offered $1,000 to wear the costume for a minute while Patterson filmed. He added that the money was never actually paid — the kind of detail a fabricator does not usually include. The second is more specific and harder to sidestep. Philip Morris, costume manufacturer and founder of Morris Costumes, said he sold Roger Patterson one of his gorilla suits around August 1967, two months before the filming. He described the suit with a maker's precision: six pieces — head, back-zippered fake-fur torso with arms and legs, glove hands and latex feet. And he said something more: that Patterson called him back asking how to make it look more realistic, and that he advised brushing the fur over the zipper and fixing it with hairspray, using football shoulder pads and sticks in the arms to look taller, and adding stuffing for bulk. Those instructions describe, one by one, the very features the film's defenders point to as impossible in a costume: the absence of a visible seam, the height, the shoulder width and the apparent arm length. The technical defence exists and deserves respect. Bill Munns built a portable high-definition digital film scanner and, with permission from Patterson's widow, scanned every frame of the first-generation copy at 5K, finding two additional frames at the start for a total of 954; in 2013 he published a technical paper with Meldrum on image integrity in Relict Hominoid Inquiry. That work is serious. But it runs into the case's insurmountable limit: the camera original is lost. Without it, no conclusion about grain, resolution or hair texture can be definitive, because every copy introduces degradation. The mainstream consensus in primatology treats the film as unproven or likely a hoax, and that is the honest position: it is not that fraud has been demonstrated beyond doubt, it is that the one piece of physical evidence that could settle it disappeared decades ago.

Can you visit Bigfoot (Sasquatch)?

Bluff Creek is in north-western California, in Humboldt County, inside the Six Rivers National Forest, about twenty-five miles north-west of Orleans. It is remote forest country and awkward to reach. The exact filming location no longer exists as it appears in the footage. The sandbar the figure walked across was a sediment bar in the creek bed, and creek beds move: decades of floods, the great 1964 flood that had reshaped the area shortly before the filming, and vegetation growth have transformed the site. Anyone going expecting to recognise the shot will not recognise it. Access is by unpaved forest roads off State Route 96. You need a high-clearance vehicle, downloaded maps and a full tank: there is no phone coverage across much of the route, no services, and many roads close in winter or after rain. It is black bear country. Check road conditions with Six Rivers National Forest before setting out. The sensible alternative, and a considerably better one, is Willow Creek, the town on Route 299 that serves as the unofficial capital of the subject. It has the Willow Creek–China Flat Museum, with a room devoted to Bigfoot holding footprint casts, expedition material and documentation from the 1960s, including Bluff Creek. It is the place where you can actually see original material. And one piece of context almost always left out: these forests are the ancestral territory of the Yurok, Karuk and Hupa peoples, whose traditions about forest beings predate 1967 by centuries and are not the same thing as the Bigfoot of American popular culture.
