The Flatwoods Monster, also nicknamed the "Braxton County Monster," refers to a tall figure reportedly seen near Flatwoods, West Virginia, in September 1952, described as having a dark, spade-or-heart-shaped head, glowing eyes, and a long, pleated body that seemed to hover rather than walk, accompanied by a foul smell. According to the accounts, local boys and adults saw a bright object streak across the sky and land nearby, and on investigating with a flashlight they met the creature, fled in fear, and later reported nausea and throat irritation. The incident became one of the most famous encounters of the early UFO era, blending Cold War-era anxieties with an almost robotic, monstrous appearance. Skeptics have long proposed a meteor fireball that night combined with a barn owl in a tree, its face distorted by flashlight glare and adrenaline, plus fumes from vegetation.
