LOCATION
Why is Ohio State Reformatory said to be haunted?
Built in stages between 1886 and 1910 in Mansfield, Ohio, the Ohio State Reformatory operated as a prison for over eighty years, housing young first-time offenders under a regime meant to reform rather than merely punish, though overcrowding later left it notorious for harsh conditions before a 1990 federal court order β the Boyd Consent Decree β forced its closure. Its most repeated ghost story concerns Helen Glattke, wife of the reformatory's superintendent, Arthur Glattke, who died in 1950 after being struck by a jewelry box that reportedly fell from a shelf in their on-site apartment and discharged a hidden pistol inside it; some staff at the time suspected a domestic altercation rather than an accident. The Gothic sandstone building gained wider fame as the primary filming location for "The Shawshank Redemption" in 1994. Visitors today report cold spots in the east cell block and the sound of cell doors slamming shut on their own.
