Why is Robert said to be haunted?
In Key West, Florida, a straw-stuffed doll named Robert has unsettled visitors since the early 1900s. Sailor and painter Robert Eugene Otto received him around 1906, and legend holds the toy was enchanted β some say by a Bahamian servant skilled in folk magic, others by an African diaspora tradition of protective charms. As a boy, Otto blamed the doll whenever furniture toppled or objects went missing, and neighbors later swore they heard several voices, not just a child's, echoing from his bedroom window. After Otto's death in 1974, the new owners of the Artist House said the doll's expression shifted and giggling drifted through empty rooms. Robert now sits behind glass at the Fort East Martello Museum, where the walls are papered with apology letters from tourists blaming him for a run of bad luck after photographing him without asking permission β a habit that has earned him the nickname "the doll of a thousand apologies" among museum staff.
