What is Am Fear Liath Mòr?
Am Fear Liath Mòr, "the Big Grey Man," haunts the summit plateau of Ben Macdhui, the second-highest peak in the Cairngorms of Scotland. The case entered mountaineering literature in 1925, when renowned climber Professor Norman Collie confessed at a Cairngorm Club dinner that during a solo 1891 ascent he heard footsteps crunching behind him, spaced far wider than a human stride, and fled in a panic for four miles despite decades of climbing experience. Other Scottish mountaineers later reported a looming grey figure glimpsed through mist, a sense of being followed, and an oppressive dread known locally as "the Fear." An old climbers' rhyme warns: "Who treads the Lairig alone by night, feels the Grey Man's step take flight." Meteorologists point to the Brocken spectre, a climber's own shadow projected onto mist and cloud and haloed by refracted light, as the likely source of the looming silhouette, combined with genuine infrasound generated by wind over the plateau's granite tors, known to produce feelings of dread in humans. No photograph or physical evidence has ever confirmed a creature, only consistent psychological accounts across a century of climbers.
