Why is Ben Macdui said to be haunted?
Ben Macdui, at 1,309 metres the second-highest peak in the British Isles, sits at the heart of Scotland's Cairngorm plateau and is home to the country's most famous mountain apparition, Am Fear Liath MΓ²r, the 'Big Grey Man.' The legend traces to naturalist and mountaineer John Norman Collie, who described hearing, in 1891, crunching footsteps behind him in thick mist on the summit, each stride several times the length of his own, and fleeing the mountain in terror despite being an experienced climber not given to superstition. Collie kept the story private for over three decades before finally recounting it publicly in 1925, after which other climbers came forward with similar accounts of an unseen presence, looming shadows, and a sense of being watched near the summit cairn. Mountaineering clubs still debate rational explanations, from Brocken spectre optical effects to infrasound generated by wind over the plateau, but the Big Grey Man remains part of every serious account of Ben Macdui's ascent.
