What is Barghest?
The Barghest is a monstrous, shape-shifting black dog of northern English folklore, most associated with Yorkshire, where it is described as larger than a calf, with huge teeth and claws, and glowing eyes, appearing as a portent of death to whoever sees it. Written references to the Barghest appear in northern English county histories and folklore collections from the early 19th century, describing it as haunting churchyards, crossroads, and the steep streets of Whitby and York, sometimes said to be visible only to the person destined to die. A 19th-century Yorkshire account records: "Whoso beholds it is doomed to die within the year, and its howl on a still night can be heard streets away." In some tellings the Barghest was believed to lead a spectral pack of Gabriel Hounds across the night sky before a death in the community, tying it to the wider British folklore of omen animals. Folklorists group the Barghest with Black Shuck of East Anglia and the Gytrash of the Midlands as regional variants of a single widespread belief in phantom black dogs, likely rooted in real encounters with large stray dogs, wolves before their extinction in Britain, and the unsettling effect of glowing eyes reflecting torchlight in the dark.
