What is Black Shuck?
Black Shuck is the spectral black dog of East Anglian folklore, said to roam the coastline, churchyards, and lonely lanes of Norfolk and Suffolk as an omen of death, with fiery, saucer-sized eyes and a silent, padding tread. The legend's most famous episode is dated precisely to 4 August 1577, when a violent storm struck the churches of Bungay and Blythburgh in Suffolk; parish records describe a huge black dog bursting through the congregation, killing two worshippers where they knelt and leaving scorch marks still shown today on the door of Holy Trinity Church, Blythburgh. A contemporary pamphlet by Abraham Fleming recorded: "This black dog, or the divel in such a linenesse, running all along down the body of the church with great swiftnesse." Local tradition holds that meeting Shuck's gaze directly means death within the year, while a sighting from a distance is merely an ill omen. Folklorists connect the legend to genuine Viking-era hound worship, medieval church storm damage misattributed to a demonic visitor, and the same wider British tradition of phantom black dogs that gave rise to Barghest in the north and inspired Arthur Conan Doyle's Hound of the Baskervilles.
