What is Morgawr?
Morgawr, Cornish for "sea giant," entered modern cryptid lore in September 1976 when a woman using the pseudonym "Mary F" sent Falmouth Packet newspaper a letter and photographs of a hump-backed creature with stumpy horns and bristles rising from Falmouth Bay. Local fisherman and paranormal enthusiast Tony "Doc" Shiels amplified the sightings, though he later admitted involvement in staging some of the photographic evidence, souring the case for serious researchers. Older Cornish fishermen nonetheless claimed similar creatures had been glimpsed off Pendennis Point for decades before 1976, describing a long neck and dark, humped back breaking the surface near the harbor mouth. A Falmouth saying from that autumn went: "When Morgawr comes to the bay, best keep the nets ashore that day." Marine biologists have proposed basking sharks, a misidentified elephant seal, or drifting debris as mundane explanations for the original sighting, given Falmouth Bay's regular seasonal shark traffic. Despite the later hoax admissions, the name persists in Cornish tourism and local pub lore as the county's answer to Loch Ness.
