Why is A75 road said to be haunted?
The A75 runs roughly 95 miles across southwest Scotland, linking the Cairnryan ferry terminals near Stranraer to the English border at Gretna, and long-haul truckers have nicknamed the stretch through Dumfries and Galloway 'Britain's most haunted road.' Drivers passing certain stretches near Glenluce and Crocketford have reported for decades a phantom hitchhiker who appears at the roadside at night and vanishes from the passenger seat before a journey's end, along with sudden unexplained fogs that roll across the carriageway on otherwise clear nights. The road's history as an old droving and coaching route through sparsely populated moorland has fed the legend for generations, and Scottish tabloids revived interest in the story through a string of trucker interviews in the 1990s and 2000s. Local police have never linked the reports to any documented accident or missing person.
