Why is Ackergill Tower said to be haunted?

Standing on the shore of Sinclair's Bay near Wick in Caithness, the early-16th-century tower of Ackergill is bound to the tragic legend of Helen Gunn, celebrated locally as the "Fair Maid of Caithness." Betrothed to a man of her own clan, Helen was reportedly abducted around 1571 by a Keith laird who coveted her, and, rather than submit to a forced marriage, she is said to have thrown herself from the tower's battlements to her death. Her spirit, dressed in white, is reported to walk the ramparts and nearby shoreline on stormy nights, sometimes described gazing out to sea as if still awaiting rescue. Later a private home and long run as an exclusive events venue, Ackergill's staff and guests have described cold drafts and a sensed presence in the upper rooms.
